Trying to see everything that Devon has to offer in the space of one visit is a bit like those Americans who come over for 2 weeks to “do“ Europe. Getting around many of the country roads can take up a lot of time and there is simply so much to take in.
The best advice is to split the county, the 3rd largest in England, into manageable bite-sized chunks. Fortunately, actually getting to Devon by road, train or air is relatively straight forward. It's just the getting around when you get there that takes time.
There are 4 main areas you will want to cover and, for weekend breaks, we would suggest finding a base around Dulverton for Exmoor and the North, somewhere near Sidmouth for Exeter and the Jurassic Coast, the Totnes/ Bovey Tracey area for Torbay and Dartmoor and, finally, the South Hams to take in the coast from Salcombe to Plymouth.
Since tourism and agriculture are Devon's 2 largest industries, there is no shortage of self catering and Bed & Breakfast accommodation in all areas. Farmhouse accommodation is especially popular with families and those exploring "off piste”.
